DESIGNER

Helen Chantler is Reflective Jewelry's Lead Designer, CEO, and founder. Originally from England, Helen spent much of her childhood in Southeast Asia — and has traveled extensively to many countries across the globe. When she eventually landed in Santa Fe, NM in 1986; she began her foray into metalwork as a leather belt-making apprentice. She soon evolved into jewelry-making at the same shop, delving into traditional handmaking techniques of the American southwest.

In Helen's extensive designs, developed over nearly 3 decades, you'll find interwoven inspirations from Helen's Celtic heritage, her fierce connection to Mother Nature, and her deep love of her chosen hometown of Santa Fe. To understand how this ring might represent a marriage, consider how through the light, rain and the nutrients of the earth, a green fuse of the vine grows into something uniquely beautiful. So, too, in relationship, do we need our nurturance from both our beloved and the earth, from which we are come. There is just one vine here-representing one love, one life path, one shared destiny and an intimacy rooted in the beauty of the nature. The motif itself, though universal, comes from the ancient Khmer culture of Ankhor Watt in Cambodia-which Helen visited in the spring of 2006.

Rings, bracelets, or necklace chains can be resized for free within 30 days of purchase. Simply send back the item with your receipt and a note explaining what you'd like us to alter. Here’s our shipping address.

ETHICAL SOURCING

Our Ethical Leadership:

We pioneered ethical sourcing in North America and started making jewelry with Fairtrade Gold in 2011. In April 2015, we became the first certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have attempted to work for years with Fairtrade International as a commercial liaison to create a viable commercial program that would build the movement. Because of major interests that oppose such a move (while claiming to support it), we are still the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have been active in these issues for over 15 years; from founding Fair Jewelry Action, the first ethical jewelry blog that evolved into a human rights and environmental justice network, to running numerous campaigns to the public and jewelry trade promoting environmental justice and human rights. Most recently we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé and published several feature articles in Jewellery Business Magazine.

In our own bio-region, we initiated and co-led a campaign to successfully block a gold mine south of our Santa Fe home and remain active on local boards to preserve Santa Fe and surrounding regions from drilling and mining.

Gold Source:

Our two-tone, gold-over-silver pieces are made entirely with gold from a Fairtrade certified mine.

With solid gold pieces, we offer recycled gold and Fairtrade Gold. Here’s a comparison of the two. But here’s the bottom line: recycled gold has no ecological or social value. It is dirty gold rebranded as eco-friendly.

Please note: we started 2021 by trading 12 ounces of gold purchased from customers for 10 ounces of Fairtrade Gold, and we are transitioning to using Fairtrade Gold throughout our in-house manufacturing, whether customers choose the extra expense or not. Sometimes our mounts and bezels are still made with recycled gold, because they are not yet available in Fairtrade Gold.

Fairtrade offers the millions of people working in artisanal mining in developing countries the best chance to work their way out of poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold is mined by small-scale miners in a safe, fair, and ecologically-responsible manner.

This piece was made with either Fair Trade gold or recycled gold. We are transitioning hundreds of inventory pieces from recycled to Fair Trade gold as quickly as we can. Fair Trade gold is a better choice for the ethical jewelry purchaser than recycled gold. It’s mined by small scale miners in a safe working environment and an ecologically responsible manner. Your purchase of Fair Trade gold gives miners and their families the opportunity to be paid a fair price and build their futures, investing in schools, better working conditions and improved healthcare. We cannot track this complex transition in real time on our website, but we do in our shop. Feel free to call if you want more specific information about which gold will be used in your piece.
