DESIGNER

Katherine Aberle is dedicated to creating designs through form and materials that are both precious and enduring. After receiving a BA from the University of California in Fine Arts, Katherine became a staff member at the highly prestigious Gemological Institute of America. During her 10 years at GIA, she taught design and developed new classes for the Institute's curriculum. She enjoys design and the creation of jewelry because of its importance in celebrating life's many rites of passage, such as marriage, anniversaries, or the birth of a child. Her most recent inspirations come from various Celtic, Greek and Native American cultures patterns, which she has integrated into her stylistically unique "intaglio" wedding bands. The basic symbols and shapes originate from many cultures and ages, and are gathered from a diverstiy of items; such as fabric borders, book ornamentation and ancient armor.

SYMBOLIC MEANING

Wind and Waves

Some mystics say the heart is all encompassing, like a great ocean. Here, the sweeping arch of the wind and waves motif, like waves on an ocean, symbolizes the flow of harmonious emotional and spiritual movement. Does not the wave contain the entire ocean, and the ocean contain every wave? Where does one begin and one end? The triangular points and strong sweeping arcs illustrate intention and direction within the greater circle. Those couples who relate to this ring have a deep emotional, passionate connection. The watery feeling is indicative of merging and emergence, flowing into unity.

ETHICAL SOURCING

Our Ethical Leadership:

We pioneered ethical sourcing in North America and started making jewelry with Fairtrade Gold in 2011. In April 2015, we became the first certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have attempted to work for years with Fairtrade International as a commercial liaison to create a viable commercial program that would build the movement. Because of major interests that oppose such a move (while claiming to support it), we are still the only certified Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the USA.

We have been active in these issues for over 15 years; from founding Fair Jewelry Action, the first ethical jewelry blog that evolved into a human rights and environmental justice network, to running numerous campaigns to the public and jewelry trade promoting environmental justice and human rights. Most recently we published the Ethical Jewelry Exposé and published several feature articles in Jewellery Business Magazine.

In our own bio-region, we initiated and co-led a campaign to successfully block a gold mine south of our Santa Fe home and remain active on local boards to preserve Santa Fe and surrounding regions from drilling and mining.

Gold Source:

Our two-tone, gold-over-silver pieces are made entirely with gold from a Fairtrade certified mine.

With solid gold pieces, we offer recycled gold and Fairtrade Gold. Here’s a comparison of the two. But here’s the bottom line: recycled gold has no ecological or social value. It is dirty gold rebranded as eco-friendly.

Please note: we started 2021 by trading 12 ounces of gold purchased from customers for 10 ounces of Fairtrade Gold, and we are transitioning to using Fairtrade Gold throughout our in-house manufacturing, whether customers choose the extra expense or not. Sometimes our mounts and bezels are still made with recycled gold, because they are not yet available in Fairtrade Gold.

Fairtrade offers the millions of people working in artisanal mining in developing countries the best chance to work their way out of poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold is mined by small-scale miners in a safe, fair, and ecologically-responsible manner.

Gemstone Source:

We source our larger diamonds, .25 carats and above, from Canada. Smaller diamonds are recycled. Our sapphires, rubies, aquamarines, and many of our emeralds are traceable to a few specific small-scale mines. We work with a world class gem dealer who has exceptional relationships with the local mining communities. He has even been featured in National Geographic. We’ve known him personally for over twenty years and through him we can offer a solid chain of custody. Comfort Fit is a descriptive term that describes the curvature of the inside surface of these rings. While many rings are flat on the interior surface, the center of a Comfort Fit interior surface is convex. That convex surface is what primarily touches the flesh of your finger. The Comfort Fit ring's outer edges are slightly wider than the center and therefore has less contact with your skin. Making it a more comfortable fit.
